The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs on Monday instructed Korean Air and Asiana Airlines to bypass North Korean airspace on routes heading to the U.S. and Russia.
"We made the decision after consultations with carriers due to safety concerns following the announcement of the Cheonan investigation on Thursday," a ministry official said.
Some 40 Korean Air and Asiana flights bypassed North Korean airspace on Monday, increasing the duration of flights to the U.S. by 30 minutes, while flights to Russia take up to an hour longer.
