A research team at the University of Pisa in Italy discovered that the physical chemical reaction that makes people sexually attractive to new partners only last for two years at most. The transition from initial passion to affectionate cuddling is inevitable due to hormonal changes.
According to the study, when a man and a woman move into a stable relationship, new hormones replace those that induce lust.
The research team took samples of the levels of hormones called neutrophins from people who are "rated on a passionate love scale." Those in the early stages of romance showed higher levels of neutrophins. The level of testosterone increased among women in love, and decreased among men in love.
However, "the so-called 'love molecules' have gone" in those whose relationship is already one to two years old.
Some scholars expect to develop a substitute hormone to induce the passion of early love.
