MBC's newscaster Kim Joo-ha was selected to anchor MBC's weekend news show, taking over as head of the weekend news desk this Saturday.

It's the first time in 15 years a woman has been appointed a main anchor for a Korean broadcaster, following Shin Eun-kyung who became the main weekend newscaster for Korea Broadcasting System in 1992.

"The company had been planning it for a long time but I only found out after I came back from my maternity leave on Tuesday. When I think about anchoring the weekend news on my own, I'm more worried than anything else," she said.

"When I co-anchored the weekday newscast with Um Ki-young for five years and five months from 2000, I didn't have to worry even when big stories were breaking because I could count on him."

Kim returned to work this week after giving birth to her first son last May. "The MBC news desk has been facing stiff competition from other broadcasters' news, but viewers have been returning to MBC recently. I hope that my taking over the weekend news will accelerate the trend," she said.

Kim has long been one of the country's most popular newscasters and was even selected as the role model most Korean women wanted to be like. So is her appointment to the weekend newscast simply a way to use her popularity to boost that show?

"I don't know if viewers expect my news to be less aggressive, more feminine or to emphasize softer aspects. But isn't my image rather the opposite?" Kim said.
