Korea Slightly Less Peaceful Than Last Year

Korea slid three notches down from 43rd to 46th place in the world peace index 2005 announced by the Korea Peace Forum, a private research center, on Thursday.

The drop was due to controversial dispatch of Korean troops to Iraq, heightened tensions in relations with Japan over the Dokdo islets and the history between the countries, and social division including labor-management conflict, the forum said.

Out of 76 countries surveyed, Denmark was the most peaceful nation, followed by Sweden, Switzerland and Austria. Almost all the permanent members of the UN Security Council were to be found in the bottom ranks, with the U.S. standing at 51st, the U.K 52nd, China 61st, and Russia 68th. France occupied the 25th spot. Japan fell nine places from its position a year ago to 19th.

The least peaceful country was Syria. But the forum said North Korea and Ethiopia would have been behind Syria if they had been included in the survey. They were excluded because they had no reliable social and economic statistics.
