Indie Flashers Planned Exposure in Advance

Two members of the indie band Couch told police on Thursday they planned in advance to expose themselves on live TV. Police said the two had a history of dropping their pants during performances near Seoul's Hongik University. Officers have applied for arrest warrants for the two on charges of obscenity and obstruction of duty.

Police said Shin and Oh hatched the plan at a billiards hall near Hongik University on July 27, three days before an MBC daytime program beamed their private parts across the nation. The day before the show, Shin met the 25-year-old lead singer of the group RUX, identified as Won, at a swimming pool at Hangang Citizens Park and let him in on the scheme. Won was booked without detention.

On the day of the incident, Won at a signal from Shin moved from the front of the stage where he was performing, whereupon Shin and Oh came on stage minus their clothes, police said.

"We took off our clothes because we thought it would be fun, as a joke, and to let people know about our music," police reported the two as saying. Won said, "I know Shin and the others said they planned the thing beforehand, but I didn't think anything was going to happen."

Police said the three were unaware that what they did was a crime and had apologized for inviting public criticism.

However, officers said, "Considering the gravity of the act, which as a preplanned incident not only had an ill influence on minors but also harmed a healthy performance culture, we have decided to punish [the offenders] strictly."

The force said it could not rule out copy-cat acts with a detrimental effect on minors and vowed to “expand our investigation into unhealthy and corrupt performance venues and related businesses near Hongik University.
