Korea ranked 10th in the 3rd Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO), an international tournament of brainwork games held in London August 21-29. A total of 5,000 mental gymnasts from a total of 64 countries participated in the games. Cambridge student Kim Sung-jun won the gold medal for 9-line go. Chang Si-young and Kim Yo-sup each won gold for speed go and Othello, respectively. Host country Britain won 104 gold medals, earning the top spot, followed by the Netherlands and the United States. MSO officials chose hearing-impaired Korean player Hong Sung-pyo, a silver-medal winner in the Othello event, as the Person of Honor for the 1999 MSO.
