Girl group Aespa will throw the ceremonial first pitch in the New York Yankees' home game against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The club said on its Instagram on Tuesday, "We look forward to welcoming K-pop sensation Aespa… to deliver our ceremonial first pitch."
The Yankees, one of the most historic clubs in Major League Baseball, have won the World Series a record 27 times since their founding in 1903. Many world-famous players such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Derek Jeter have played for the team.Aespa will be the first Korean celebrities to throw the ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium.Singer and actress Su-zy, who was a member of the now-disbanded girl group miss A, threw the ceremonial pitch at Dodger Stadium in May 2014 while Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin was playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, neither the Yankees nor the White Sox currently have a Korean player, meaning Aespa were chosen for the ceremonial pitch based solely on their appeal to American fans.Band member Giselle cannot attend the event due to health issues. Aespa will also perform at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York before returning home.
