Design Seoul headquarters has developed a graphic image map of Seoul showing 50 tourist spots in the capital. On simplified representations of key sites, the map shows symbolic images representing the historic period and physical and functional characteristics of these places.

Four symbols indicate periods -- the Chosun Dynasty, the Japanese colonial period, post-war to 1990, and 1991 until present -- and eight representing the function, such as shopping area or park. Four symbols describe the significance of the place.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will print the map as a card, with the back to contain another map, directions and explanations of the symbols. The city government hopes that the new image map will serve as a friendly guide for foreign tourists visiting Seoul.
