North Korea has announced a suspension of cross-border communication including the military hotline during the South Korea-U.S. military defense drill.

In a statement carried by its state-run news agency, the People's Army also called on soldiers to be combat ready, highlighting the need for self-defense.

North Korean authorities are describing Seoul's annual drill with Washington this year as "unprecedented" in terms of size and duration. Officials there in recent weeks have frequently labeled the training a prelude to war.
