The Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA) said Wednesday a total of 3,663 imported cars were newly registered in February, down 2.6 percent from January, and down 19.9 percent year-on.
In terms of brands, 606 new BMW vehicles were registered, ranking top, followed by Audi (495 cars), Mercedes-Benz (487), Volkswagen (466), Lexus (283), and Chrysler (236).
Although Honda was the only imported brand whose sales exceeded 100,000 cars last year and remained top with 666 car sales in January, it skidded to seventh with sales of 228 cars. Infinity ranked eighth with 192 car sales. Furthermore, Honda Korea will raise prices by W320,000 to W890,000 (US$1=W1,551) this month to offset the strengthening yen, so the Japanese carmaker is expected to face an increasingly bleak future.
Meanwhile, even amid its American headquarters¡¯ demand for a government bailout, Chrysler made aggressive investments, rising from seventh to sixth in sales last month in Korea.
In terms of models, the BMW 528 sold most with 241 cars, followed by Audi's A4 2.0 TFSI Quattro (192), and Volkswagen Golf's 2.0 TDI (157).
