Many people are misinformed about what food to eat when on a diet. People often think it is advantageous to simply avoid greasy food, but it is also important to pay attention to foods that are small in volume but high in calories.

The calorie content of salads, usually regarded as diet-friendly food, can vary greatly depending on the types of vegetables and dressing used.

One serving of salad should contain a mere 100 to 120 kcal, but the dressing can increase the overall calorie content to 500 to 600 kcal. Popular dressings, such as honey mustard and thousand island, are mayonnaise-based -- and one spoonful of mayonnaise is equivalent to 100 kcal.

Those who often choose simple baguettes or bagels when they are on a diet probably do not know that these bread items are not low in calories. About 100 grams of baguette equals 295 kcal, and one bagel weighing 100 grams measures up to 350 kcal. Adding one tablespoon of cream cheese, about 20 grams, is additional 45 kcal, and one tablespoon of jam, or 20 grams, is 50 kcal.
