British newspaper the Daily Telegraph on Monday said technology "is killing romance," citing a poll that finds 62 percent of Brits have never written a love letter. Only 20 percent of respondents said they have ever written a love poem. On the other hand, 69 percent of 2,558 respondents said they express love through text messages or emoticons on mobile phones. The poll was conducted by the National Trust, a British civil organization dedicated to preserving historic properties.

"Considering our rich history of romantic letter-writers, this really does suggest that we are forgetting to make time for romance in modern Britain," said Andrew McLaughlin, head of communications at the National Trust. "As a country, we have produced some of the most romantic writing ever produced in any language -- from Shakespeare's sonnets to touching love letters written by Winston Churchill."

In stark contrast, 70 percent of women and 53 percent of men replied that they would rather receive handwritten love letters instead of text messages or emails.
