Korean automakers have ranked fifth in terms of car production for four years straight. The Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association says Korean carmakers produced over 3.8 million vehicles last year accounting for almost 5.5 percent of the world's production.

Japanese automakers topped the list, making 11 million cars, and thanks to rising domestic demand China's ranking went up by a notch to second place compared to the year before, beating the United States.

The financial meltdown and liquidity crisis brought down U.S. carmakers' ranking to third, while Germany in fourth place produced over 6 million cars.
