More men than women now live on Jeju Island, for the first time since 1991, when the self-governing province began recording statistics on resident registration.

According to a report released on Monday by Jeju's provincal government, the population was 565,519 on Dec. 31 of last year. Some 560,618 were Koreans and 4,901 were foreigners. In terms of gender, 282,937 (50.03 percent) were men and 282,582 (49.97 percent) were women, with men exceeding women by 355. However, when Korean nationals are considered, there were still more women (280,530) than men (280,088).

The reason for the increasing male population lies in the soaring birthrate of baby boys. The ratio of girls to boys aged zero to nine was 100:109.9. Also, more foreign men live in Jeju than foreign women. Some 1,797 Chinese live in Jeju, followed by Korean-Chinese (559), Vietnamese (532), Indonesians (394), Americans (251), Mongolians (246), Filipinos (208), and Japanese (155).
