Jinro recorded its largest-ever sales of soju (traditional Korean distilled liquor) last year, hogging 51.4 percent of domestic market share.

According to the Korea Alcohol and Liquor Industry Association on Thursday, Jinro sold 59.73 million boxes of soju last year, up 8.7 percent from 2007. Each box contained 30 360 ml bottles of soju. In December 2008 alone, Jinro sold 6.86 million boxes, which accounted for 55.2 percent of the market, the largest sales in its 85-year history.

A KALIA official cited economic recession as a main reason behind the boost in sales. The total sales of soju last year was 116.14 million boxes, or 3.48 billion bottles, up 5.6 percent from the previous year.
