History Textbooks to Be Corrected by Next Year

The Seoul Central District Court on Thursday rejected a suit by five authors of a modern history textbook published by Kumsung Publishing to prevent the publisher from distributing a revised version of the textbook.

The authors, including Kim Han-jong, a history education professor at Korea National University of Education, claimed the publisher revised the original textbook without their consent after the government recommended changes to what it deemed leftwing bias.

The ruling clears the way for the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to distribute new history textbooks with 206 corrections from the new school year starting this March.

The ministry ordered Kumsung Publishing to revise its modern and contemporary history textbooks in November 2008, and the publisher obliged. However, the authors argued that making changes to the textbooks without consent of the authors was copyright violation and filed a petition last month.

But the court ruled the changes were legal under the contract with the authors.
