A dozen or so bulls that are in great shape will be picked and branded as "Korean Proven Bulls."
Scientists in the administration will then extract sperm from these bulls so healthy cows can give birth to calves through artificial insemination. Younglings will be brought up at farms run jointly by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and National Agricultural Cooperative Federation. The three agencies will go through the process again as calves mature to become bulls themselves.
The RDA said this scientific cycle is aimed not only at breeding the healthiest cows and bulls, but also producing high-quality Korean beef. Kim Si-dong, a senior researcher at the RDA, said, "In order to produce high-quality beef, we have changed and improved the way to breed the animal since 1997." Kim said about 97 to 98 percent of calves are born after health checkups on proven bulls and artificial insemination. He said this is to ensure the safety and the quality of Korean beef in the future.
