The women of Jeju Island are the most engaged in economic activities in the country, according to the statistics compiled by the Human Resource Development Center of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province published on Wednesday.

Women account for 50.1 percent of the total population of the Island, numbering 280,012 of 559,258 as of the end of 2008, which is 0.3 percentage point higher than the national average. Jeju Island is traditionally known to have large number of women.

Women in Jeju Island have an average life expectancy of 83.3 years, the longest in the country and more than one year longer than the national average. WomenĄŻs economic activity participation rate was 63.3 percent, much higher than the national average of 50.2 percent, and 70.5 percent of those who passed civil servant examinations were women, compared to the national average of 55.2 percent.

The percentage of women paying for the national pension scheme was 39.7 percent, 4.5 percentage points higher than the national average. The percentage of double income families, 53.7 percent, was also the highest in the country and much higher than the national average of 35.2 percent. The participation rate in volunteer programs, 10.6 percent, was also the highest in the country, when the average rate nationwide remained 5.9 percent.
