The Ministry of Environment has come up with new plans to make President Lee Myung-bakĄ¯s "low carbon, green growth" program a reality.

In its 2009 policy report to Lee, the ministry announced plans to enhance enhancing the country's green industry to become the world's fifth largest by the year 2020. Through boosting the country's environmental technologies such as sewage treatment and disposal, the ministry vowed to raise the nation's overseas exports to W8 trillion (US$1=W1,313) in just four years' time. Also, the government says it will foster Korea's carbon market to exceed US$750 million by 2012.

Next year Korea will join a number of developing countries in adopting the carbon labeling system. In addition, the ministry is looking to designate more nature preserves, increase the number of natural gas buses and hybrid cars as well as grant environmental tax cuts for facilities that lower greenhouse gas emissions. The ministry is to invest $1.4 billion of next year's budget to create some 43,000 jobs and promote the country's environmental industries.

Under the title "Green New Deal," the plan aims to overcome the economic crisis by promoting clean environment projects.
