U.S. Agency Uses 'East Sea' for Map of Korea

A U.S. government agency is using the term "East Sea" for the body of water between Korea and Japan on its map of the Korean Peninsula.

The National Virtual Translation Center, which provides translated information from foreign countries to the U.S. intelligence community, is now using this map for its Korea introduction page.

The map the center posted is a revised version of the one the CIA uses labeling the waters as the "Sea of Japan."

With the change, other American government agencies are expected to follow suit.

However, the site still lists "Sea of Japan" on its Japanese page.
