Korean Troops Return Home from Iraq

More than 600 Korean soldiers stationed in Iraq and Kuwait have finally come home. After four years and three months of service, the Zaytun and Daiman units arrived at Seoul Air Base on Friday morning.

Zaytun troops stationed in the Kurdish-controlled northern Iraqi city of Irbil since 2004 carried out peacekeeping and reconstruction activities in the war-torn country.

After being dispatched to Irbil in 2004 the Zaytun Unit built the Zaytun Hospital, where they treated over 88,000 local residents, as well as several libraries and schools.

Soldiers also operated a technical education center where they trained Iraqi students in areas such as auto maintenance and cooking.

The Daiman air force unit dispatched to Kuwait offered transportation support to the Zaytun Unit and the other multinational forces in Iraq.

During the past four years the Daiman Unit transported over 40,000 troops and more than 4,000 tons of war supplies to help support international peacekeeping efforts.

With the UN Security Council mandate expiring at year's end the last remaining troops dispatched this past May and September returned home.

As troops withdrew from Iraq, Zaytun's facilities, equipment and supplies were donated to the Kurdistan Regional Government.
