Hemorrhoids were the reason the greatest number of patients had surgery in Korea last year. According to statistics released by the National Health Insurance Corporation on Wednesday, some 1.318 million people had surgery on national insurance last year, and a whopping 269,000 was for piles. Some 228,000 people had cataract operations, 159,000 had Caesarian sections, and 107,000 had spinal cord operations.
However, cataract surgery topped the list in terms of the number of procedures with 278,677 cases out of a total 1.47 million, probably because they normally require at least two operations.
A total of W2.365 trillion (US$1=W1,321) from the national health insurance was spent on surgery last year, and the greatest amount of money (W279.5 billion) went to patients with spinal cord conditions. Stent implants and cataract operations were in second and third place with W251.4 billion and W247.8 billion.
