To help low-income earners suffering economic difficulties, the government has decided to expand eligibility for welfare by about 100,000 from the current 1.53 million, and to drastically expand emergency support for low-income earners who have difficulty making a living due.

The government will study ways to further ease the upper limit of family breadwinners' income and property as a criterion to give welfare benefits to more low-income earners, and simplify the process of selecting beneficiaries, which normally takes three to four months.

The government will also continue to increase the number of beneficiaries of emergency welfare support, currently numbering about 30,000, through an improved system of support for medical and housing expenses to low-income earners who have lost their jobs or suffered from poor health.

Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Lee Dong-kwan said, "Each government agency has submitted a report on its major tasks, which will be announced as an economic policy program on Tuesday. But no final decision has been made. Those plunged into poverty after corporate bankruptcies have received a harsher blow than others. In this situation, there was a consensus about the need to come up with a temporary policy for such people."
