From next year, parents of children aged between 0 and 5 who earn less than the average of that population group will be given subsidies to fully support kindergarten fees. Also, low-income parents with children aged one or younger will be provided with W100,000 of childcare stipends per month.

The Cabinet Meeting was held on Tuesday and ratified the plan put forward by the Presidential Committee on Ageing Society and Population Policy. Under the new plan, the number of children receiving free childcare will increase from the current 390,000 to 570,000.

Currently, only children from poor and borderline poor families, who earn up to 120 percent of minimum wage, are eligible to benefit from free childcare services. If such families decide not to send their children aged one year or under to childcare facilities, they will instead receive a childcare stipend of W100,000 per month from July of next year.
