Korea ranked 12th in the OECD for the third year running in science and technology innovation.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology cited the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning on Sunday as saying the country ranked 12th among the 30 OECD members in the composite science and technology innovation index for 2008. The index compares countries in five categories -- resources, environment, networking, scientific and technological activities, and scientific and technological achievements.

Korea scored 11.24 points out of 31, higher than the OECD average of 10.09 points but are still a mere 53.5 percent of the U.S., the top-ranking country.

But Korea ranked third in scientific and technological activities with 3.47 percent of GDP invested in research and development, after Israel (4.65 percent) and Sweden (3.73 percent). It ranked ninth in scientific and technological achievements, including patent applications compared to R&D investment.
