Korean-American teenage golfer Michelle Wie came sixth after the first round of the U.S. LPGA Qualifying School on Thursday. Wie hit 3-under 69 with four birdies and one bogey in the LPGA International CC Legend Course in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Wie, who has been in a slump for last two years, changed her style of playing. She never even touched a driver in four par-5 holes, and strictly played safe with three-on strategy. She only grabbed her driver in four par-4 holes with relatively wide fairways. Because she had sworn that she would not give interviews until the end of the tournament, her swing coach David Leadbetter, acting as her spokesman, said the most important thing in the Q School is not to make mistakes, so Wie tried her best to play a simple yet reassuring game.

The media were still interested in Wie despite her slump, with the AP saying, "With little fanfare and even less to say, Michelle Wie took an important first step Wednesday toward earning an LPGA Tour card."
