None of the World's 'Top Technologies' Are Korean
None of the world's best technologies in major areas are Korean, and the trend will probably continue for the next five years. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on Wednesday said the evaluation of 90 major scientific and technological sectors chosen in a survey found that the U.S. has 270 out of the 364 key technologies, the EU 60 and Japan 34.

The survey was conducted by questionnaire and interviews with experts based on research on theses and patent applications in key technologies in each country. The result suggests that Korea lags about 6.8 years behind the leading nations, and the country¡¯s technological accomplishment is estimated at 72.8 percent of theirs.

Although Korean enterprises are market leaders in the memory chip and LCD sectors, Korea is not listed among the leading countries in these sectors either because the survey rates the intellectual rights to core technology as well as design, equipment and manufacturing.

Korea ranked relatively high in information, electronics and communication, where it is placed at 81.4 percent of the level of the leading countries and lags only 3.8 years behind.

Dr. Shin Yong-hyun, a scientist at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science who took part in the latest survey, said Korean scientists "cut a conspicuous figure in some sectors, but their successes are individual achievements. We should strategically select a few specific technological sectors and support researchers there so that they can form a network on their own and take the initiative in their own fields."
