Popular Korean actress Moon Geun-young, who has secretly donated W850 million (US$1=W1,443) to the Community Chest of Korea over the past five years, has become a target for malicious internet users.
Some are posting comments saying her good deeds were merely a moneymaking publicity stunt, while others accuse her of hogging the limelight.
Moon is also being accused of regionalism with her donations. Defense analyst Jee Man-won has posted several online messages even saying that turning Moon into a heroine is part of a left-wing plot. He was pointing out the fact that Moon's grandfather, who died in 2005, used to be a communist guerrilla fighter during the Korean War and had been jailed several times for supporting North Korea.
Moon has a history of donating. When she was a high school student, she donated W10 million to the construction of a library for children. Later, she donated sizable amounts of money on at least 10 different occasions to help children suffering from leukemia and other types of cancer. She also donated hundreds of millions of won to academic facilities for children in Haenam, South Jeolla Province and a book reading organization and towards scholarships for students at her alma mater and hometown of Gwangju.
People who accuse Moon of having an ulterior motive should first look at their own twisted dispositions. To make unfounded accusations such as these is almost inhumane.
It was only a month and a half ago that actress Choi Jin-sil committed suicide after struggling with insults about her being spread online. Though it is indirect, insulting people on the Internet is a very real form of attack. Online libel laws must be brought up to speed to prevent such violence.
Moon and her family say they will not take measures to deal with the malicious comments, hoping they will fade away in time. Moon and her family likely made anonymous donations until now for purely philanthropic reasons. Hopefully such warmth will eventually prove sufficient to melt the cold hatred driving such malicious postings.
