Korea Building Soldiers of the Future
Korean soldiers will get a new futuristic look by the mid-2020s, including combat bullet-proof fatigues with camouflage and bio-information monitoring functions, night vision goggles and scopes.

An official at the Agency for Defense Development, which is in charge of the country's weapons development, on Monday said the agency started core technology research on weapons systems for future soldiers.

In the first stage until the mid-2010s, equipment such as a state-of-the-art XK-11 combined rifle, which can shoot 20 mm air-burst munitions, a portable information processor, a multifunctional helmet, a walkie-talkie, protective gear, and a combined battery-ultracapacitor will be developed. Soldiers can receive or transmit voice, video images and data with their walkie-talkie, and will wear a bullet-proof vest with a 72-hour battery.

In the second stage until the mid-2020s, ADD will develop a multifunctional helmet that is capable of around-the-clock surveillance and detection of biological and chemical attacks. Combat fatigues furnished with enhanced bullet-proof systems will protect against biological and chemical attacks, and process and control bio-information.
