Five Koreans aboard a Japanese freighter have been abducted off the coast of Somalia.

The Foreign Ministry on Sunday said the 20,000 ton cargo ship named Chemstar Venus was hijacked 96 miles east of Somalia's port city of Aden on Saturday evening. Eighteen Filipinos were also on board.

A ministry official said nothing about the hijackers and the safety of the crewmen is known.

This does not come as too much of a surprise, since a total of 63 hijacking cases in Somali waters have been reported this year alone through September, according to the International Maritime Bureau.
