The volume of rice production is expected to hit a four-year high, thanks to decreases in storm and insect damage this year. The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said Tuesday that rice production should increase by 9.9 percent to 4.84 million tons. The figure is the biggest since a 5-million ton harvest in 2004.
Rice production has increased by 11.6 percent to 520 kg per 10 ha this year from 466 kg last year, recording an all-time high. Even though rice cultivation decreased by 1.5 percent last year, rice production increased thanks to more sunshine and less damage from rain and insect attacks this year.
Rice production this year broke the record set during the financial crisis of 1997. Bumper rice harvests somehow seem to coincide with financial crises in South Korea.
