Barack Obama won a landslide victory in the 2008 White House race. However, he had already won over John McCain in Korea¡¯s publishing industry. Twenty books related to Obama have been published over the past 16 months between now and last July. Meanwhile there are just two books on McCain and one on Sarah Palin.

Books on Obama range from his autobiography to collections of his speeches that prove his reputation as ¡®the alchemist of public speaking,¡¯ self-improvement books that deliver messages about his leadership and success, and biographies for children. Obama¡¯s autobiography started the boom. Early July last year, Random House Korea translated and published ¡°Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.¡± Only two days after the first book came out, ¡°Audacity of Hope¡± was published. The second book, where Obama wrote about his political philosophy and life-view, appealed to Korean readers and 10,000 copies have been sold until now. Both books occupied top- 10 slots on the New York Times bestseller¡¯s list for a long time.

On the strength of that success came entries like ¡°Barack Obama In His Own Words¡± published by JoonAng Books; ¡°The faith of Barack Obama¡± by The Chungrim Publishing; ¡°Barack Obama¡± by Myungjinbook. Most of these books deliver hopeful ¡®Yes, we can¡¯ messages, in line with Obama¡¯s campaign catchphrase.
