The first U.S. presidential poll was held in Dixville Notch, in northern New Hampshire, where only 21 people were registered to vote from a total population of 74. No Democrat presidential hopeful has won a victory in this town since Herbert Humphrey, then vice president, in 1968.
The town has had a longstanding tradition of midnight voting since 1960, since Neal Tillotson, a resident who died at the age of 102, asked voters to cast their ballots at that time. All registered voters gather at night and finish voting within 10 minutes.
Rick Erwin, a town clerk, told AP, ˇ°We always boast a 100-percent turnout rate.ˇ±
