Driving Tests to Be Simplified
Learner drivers will no longer need to take the mandatory three-hour technical education at the driving test centers, and those reapplying for a driver's license after their old one has been revoked will not have to take the technical test. The National Police Agency on Tuesday approved changes to the driving test that will go into effect early next year.

Under the plan, the 20 hours of technical education for ordinary Class-1 driving licenses at private driving schools will decrease to 15 hours. The 10 hours of mandatory driving sessions before the road test will be abolished.

The 15 technical tasks will decrease to 11, with four tasks, such as stopping before crosswalks and shifting gears abolished. When renewing licenses, Class-2 driving license holders will be allowed to submit results of medical checkups to authorities instead of driving aptitude test certificates issued by medical institutions.

Meanwhile, disqualification criteria will become stricter. For example, test takers will be disqualified if they run a red light or cross the median line once.

That will probably reduce the test fee (W5,000) and the technical education fee (W76,000) for driving test centers (US$1=W1,288). The NPA plans to work out a revision bill of the road traffic law based on the improvement plan to submit to the National Assembly early next year.
