The world's fourth-largest memory chipmaker Hynix Semiconductor recorded sales of W1.84 trillion for the third quarter, down 1 percent from the second quarter, and operating loss of W465 billion, up W300 billion from W172 billion in the second quarter. The company on Thursday said net loss for the third quarter was W1.67 trillion, up W900 billion in the second quarter.
The results Hynix are due to the heated competition among global chipmakers to expand supply, which led to decreasing profitability. The price of DRAM and NAND flash memory, Hynix¡¯ key products, for the third quarter fell 11 and 23 percent. Even though the company sold the same number of items, profit declined by a huge margin. Worldwide chipmakers with the sole exception of Samsung Electronics are struggling to make ends meet due to oversupply and the global financial crisis.
