The Bang Il-yong Foundation has named veteran pansori singer Jeong Cheol-ho as the winner of the 15th Bang Il-young Traditional Music Award. Jeong was taught in the traditional one-person opera by Im Bang-ul and mastered key works such as "Jeokbyeokga,¡± based on the historical legend of the Battle of Red Cliffs, "Shimcheongga,¡± about a girl who sacrifices herself for her blind father, and ¡°Sugungga,¡± a story of the Dragon King of the Southern Sea, a terrapin, and a wily rabbit. In 1964, Jeong recorded the complete ¡°Jeokbyeokga¡± in Im¡¯s version. He gave his first concert on the Ajaeng, a stringed instrument in 1948. Since 1980s, Jeong has been staging changgeuk or traditional operas to tell stories about the life of historical figures.
The foundation¡¯s review board chose Jeong as the winner because of his ¡°huge contribution to the development of Korean traditional music. He was the driving force for the modernization of pansori and changgeuk as an innovator of Korean traditional music, and he has been committed to music education for the next generation.¡±
