First graders in middle and high school will use different textbooks in English and mathematics according to their level starting next year. The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology on Wednesday said to improve public education, different levels of textbooks will be developed and launched for use next year.
The differences will be mainly in accompanying question books, which will be divided into difficult, medium and easy. Students will choose questions that fit their level.
The ministry approved some 42 auxiliary English textbooks, 25 for middle school students and 17 for high school students, and some 45 auxiliary math textbooks, 27 for middle school and 18 for high school.
Some 77 percent of middle schools and 76 percent of high schools nationwide offer different levels of classes for English and math.
It said teachers so far had to make up the materials themselves, but with the new textbooks next year, the quality of classes will improve dramatically. It added the new books will be distributed for second graders in middle school and second and third graders in high school in 2010 and for third graders in middle school in 2011.
