President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday pledged to build up the southern coastal area as the second largest economic zone after the Seoul metropolitan area. Lee made the remarks after a policy briefing from South Gyeongsang Province Governor Kim Tae-ho on a "sunbelt" plan, to develop the region. The briefing, which was followed by a seminar on the development of the province, was held at the South Gyeongsang provincial government building in Changwon.
"South Gyeongsang Province is a gateway to Japan and the pan-Pacific region. It is Korea's new growth base on which promising next-generation industries including robotics, aviation and space are growing steadily based on two free economic zones and port logistics facilities,Ħħ Lee said. He promised to support the province in development of state-of-the-art manufacturing industries so it can emerge as a new economic and industrial center.
Turning to the financial crisis, Lee said, "We must expand the domestic market for one to two years, given adverse economic conditions around the world. The government plans to make urgent investment to boost the domestic market and create more jobs, and inject money into new sectors to create a favorable environment for businesses."
