Students' High School Choice in Seoul Outlined

Seoul Students to Get Greater Choice of High Schools
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on Wednesday said high schools in the city will be filled in three stages when greater choice is introduced in two years¡¯ time.

Each school will accept 20 percent of its students in the first stage, 40 percent in the second stage, and 40 percent in the third stage. The system will be adopted in 2010, when children now in second grade of middle school enter high school.

Since all high schools in Seoul are available for selection in the first stage, students are allowed to choose two preferred schools anywhere in the city. In the first stage, schools select 20 percent of students by lottery from among applicants.

Those who are not allocated to their preferred school in the first stage may next choose two schools within their school districts -- there are 11.

The rest are allocated by lottery to a school in their residential district or neighboring school district.
