Which Korean Companies Are Most Turned Off by Energy Saving?
Incheon International Airport guzzles the most energy in Korea, with 53,053 Tons of Oil Equivalent (TOE), followed by Namyang Technology Research Center of the Hyundai and Kia Motor companies with 41,601 TOE, Grand National Party lawmaker Lee Dal-gon said Tuesday, based on documents submitted for a parliamentary audit of the Korea Energy Management Corporation. The Hotel Lotte was third, with 33,039 TOE, partly due to its amusement park, Lotte World, and the Seoul National University ranked fourth, with 32,695 TOE. The COEX came fifth with 32,138 TOE.

The TOE unit is applied to all forms of energy, including petroleum, gas and electricity. One TOE equals 107 kcal of heat created by one ton of crude oil, the gasoline equivalent of 16 return journeys between Seoul and Busan in a sedan offering 12km per liter.

¡°Buildings using more than 200 TOE of energy per year are supposed to voluntarily sign a government contract pledging to save energy -- but only seven of the 32 listed buildings have done so. This demonstrates public organizations¡¯ low level of commitment to energy saving,¡± said Lee.
