The Japanese Public Trusts its Press
76 percent of Japanese think newspapers are the most influential form of media, Japan¡¯s Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday, after conducting a poll ahead of ¡®Newspaper Week.¡¯ Respondents were asked to select the top three media channels from newspapers, television, and the internet. Yomiuri Shimbun did not disclose the percentage of the respondents who did not select the newspaper as most popular.

According to the poll, more than 90 percent were reported to have answered yes when asked whether newspapers are still necessary, while 85 percent said they trusted newspaper reports and interpretations. Furthermore, 86 percent said newspapers provide necessary information and helpful tips for life and 70 percent said newspapers help prevent the violation of human rights. The survey was conducted on September 6 and 7.
