President Lee Myung-bak will deliver a Roosevelt-style radio address to the people every week starting next Monday, talking about important issues for seven to 10 minutes between 7:30 and 8 a.m. The first radio address aims to explain the current financial crisis and appeal to them for help.
The talks are reminiscent of U.S. president Franklin Roosevelt's ¡°fireside chats¡± during the Great Depression of the 1930s, which he delivered in a homely style as though he were talking to a neighbor.
In a luncheon meeting at the Korea Veterans Association on Wednesday, Lee quoted Roosevelt¡¯s famous dictum in his inaugural address, ¡°The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.¡± Lee is apparently seeking to model himself after the architect of the New Deal in his battle against the current crunch.
A senior presidential official said President Lee is "not simply emulating president Roosevelt, but it is true that we can learn a lot from Roosevelt's leadership in the current economic difficulties."
