It has been nearly two years since we bid farewell to world-famous avant-garde video artist Paik Nam-june -- but his artistic legacy has been revived with the opening of the Nam June Paik Art Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
To commemorate its anniversary, the Nam June Paik festival entitled "Now Jump" is being held, not only to shed light on Paik's achievements but to inspire emerging artists.
The festival showcases the artist's works divided into different "stations" presented through concepts of both stillness and anticipation of movement. They include his first large-scale installation, called "TV Garden," which comprised 30 television sets lying face up within a thick grove of potted palms, while fish swam in an aquarium in front of looped images critique the brainwashing of viewers.
Also displayed are works by fellow members of the Fluxus movement -- an avant-garde, experimental movement in the 1960s -- and friends and followers from both Korea and abroad who say their works have been heavily influenced by Paik.
