10 Years for Namdaemun Arsonist Upheld
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a sentence of 10 years in jail for the man who set the Sungnyemun or South Gate in Seoul on fire, causing the historic landmark to be razed to the ground.

Chae Jong-ki (70) set fire to the 600-year-old National Treasure no. 1, better known as Namdaemun, on Feb. 10, when he broke into the second, wooden story of the gate using an aluminum ladder, sprinkled it with paint thinner from a plastic bottle and set it ablaze with a disposable lighter.
