Some 26 chiefs and auditors of agencies appointed by the previous government are refusing to heed government calls to resign, flaunting a Korean tradition that sees a mass exodus of senior civil servants whenever there is a change of government.
A list submitted by Cheong Wa Dae to the ruling Grand National Party recently shows four chiefs of agencies appointed by the Roh Moo-hyun administration are refusing to step down. They are Arts Council Korea Chairman Kim Jung-heun, Korea Culture & Content Agency President Ko Suk-man, Korea Press Foundation Chairman Park Rae-boo, and Korean Film Archive Director Cho Sun-hee. However, Park has expressed his intention to resign by the end of October.
Among auditors at various agencies, five former presidential secretaries or officials are refusing to resign. Eight officials who were members of the former ruling Uri Party are also still working at various organizations.
