Chosun¡¯s Documentary about North Korean Defectors Previewed at Japanese Diet
A preview of the Chosun Ilbo¡¯s documentary film about North Korean defectors, titled On the Border, was screened at 11:00 am, October 1, at the Japanese Diet. Attending the screening, which was sponsored by an organization dedicated to safeguarding human rights for North Korean defectors, were four representatives from the organization, Nakasawa Masaharu and Nakayama Yashide from the House of Representatives, Fukuyama Tesuoh from the House of Councils, and three North Korean defectors now living in Japan.

The preview that was shown was a 45-minute, Japanese version edited from the film, which comprises four 50-minute volumes in total. Weeping could be heard from the audience during a scene in which defector Lee Young-wha separates from her mother in China. Clapping broke the silence during a scene in which a North Korean defector finally crosses the Thai border from Laos after traversing rugged mountains and rivers in China. And there were audible reactions to the reports of human trafficking along the Tuman River. Prior to the screening, Chairman Miura introduced the Chosun Ilbo¡¯s documentary as a remarkable work that vividly illustrates the reality of North Korean defectors.

Following the preview, Congressman Nakagawa stated that he would hold a larger preview at the end of the year when Congress opened. Reverend Chun Ki-won from the Durihana Mission added that ensuring human rights for North Korean defectors has become an international issue, one that extends beyond North and South Korea.
