The Chosun Ilbo's documentary on North Korean refugees, "On The Border," had its Japanese preview at the House of Representatives in Tokyo on Wednesday. Some 40 lawmakers and North Korea human rights activists attended the preview held by the Society to Help Returnees to North Korea. Three defectors from North Korea who settled in Japan also came to watch the documentary.
It was a Japanese version of a 45 minute episode edited from four 50-minute episodes focusing on North Koreans who escape to China.
After the preview, Rep. Masaharu Nakagawa promised to organize a larger-scale preview for parliamentarians at the end of the year, when a new Diet is formed. The Rev. Chun Ki-won of Durihana Mission, an organization helping North Korean defectors, said the human rights of refugees have become an important issue not only in Korea but also around the world.
A defector going by the alias Kim Chul-soo said, "Seeing what I experienced myself breaks my heart." He added the hope "that many people will sympathize with the difficulties of North Korean defectors in Japan."
