Beef Labeling Grace Period Over for Small Restaurants
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Tuesday said it will inspect all restaurants, including small ones measuring 33 to 100 sq. m, for their country-or-origin labeling of beef beginning Wednesday. In early July, the ministry compelled all restaurants nationwide to follow new rules regardless of their size but gave a three-month grace period to restaurants measuring less than 100 sq. m, only checking if they labelled beef falsely in other respects.

Restaurants measuring less than 33 sq. meters have until Dec. 21 to comply with country-of-origin labelling rules.

¡ßHow to label

Restaurant proprietors must label the country of origin of all foods made with beef including Western foods such as barbecue, steak, hamburger, beef stew, sandwiches and pizzas and Chinese foods such as beef chop suey and sweet-and-sour beef, in addition to Korean foods.

¡ßCash rewards

If they are suspicious of country-of-origin labeling, consumers can report by phone at 1588-8112 or on the Internet at www.naqs.go.kr. Cash rewards for whistleblowers will range between W50,000 and W2 million per case (US$1=W1,207).
