President Lee Myung-bak and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev met at the Kremlin on Monday afternoon to discuss expanding cooperation in political, diplomacy, defense and the economy.

In a statement released after their meeting, the two leaders said they agreed on South Korea's import of at least 7.5 million tons or 20 percent of its annual demand of Russian pipeline natural gas per year from 2015. While the two leaders were watching, representatives from the two countries' state-run corporations, Korea Gas Corporation and Gazprom, signed a memorandum of understanding on joint research about laying a pipeline from the Russian border area via North Korea.

The two leaders also agreed to promote cooperation for the joint development of far eastern Siberia and expand cooperation in space, including South Korea's development of small satellite launch vehicles.
