A series of novels by Cho Kyong-nan titled ¡°I Bought a Balloon¡± published by the Moonji was named as the winner of the 2008 Dongin Literary Award. A panel of judges in Yangyang, Gangwon Province reached the decision on Friday after pondering a shortlist of five.
¡°Cho keenly sees the existential conditions of human beings living in modern society -- waking up early in the morning, barely appeasing hunger and withstanding loneliness,¡± the judges said. ¡°¡®I Bought a Balloon¡¯ shows admirable inventions of magical alchemy among modern people, who with sincerity and passion make their lives happy like colorful balloons.¡±
Cho (39) was born in Seoul and graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts. She made her debut in the Dong-A Ilbo Spring Literary Contest, and has won several prizes such as a new writer¡¯s award from Munhakdongne, Today¡¯s Young Artist Award and the Hyundae Munhak Award.
The award comes with prize money of W50 million (US$1=W1,165) and a trophy. The award ceremony will be held in early November.
